I used to think I was doing everything right raising our kids with the culture and values I grew up with. But one day, my son asked me, “Why don’t we ever visit Dad’s side of the family anymore?” And that question hit deeper than I expected. Back when we lived in Oregon, Gabe’s side came to visit after the kids were born. And in my culture, that matters. When a child is born, the family shows up. They bring blessings, love, and presence. Then we moved to Texas and, for a while, lived just down the street from Gabe’s family. We saw them every day. It was beautiful. The kids felt connected, known, and loved. But when life shifted again and we moved away, the daily rhythm ended and slowly, I drifted back into old habits. That silence left a wound. So without even realizing it, I started centering everything around my culture my people, my traditions, my way. Until my son reminded me: he is made of BOTH. Both sides matter. Both cultures deserve space. And now, here we are. The kids are in Utah, spending time with their grandparents Gabe’s parents and having the absolute time of their lives. Full of laughter, memories, and stories that will stick with them forever. It’s funny how healing can sneak up on you. How one honest question from a child can reroute your parenting journey. I’m still learning. Still softening.
