At our last pediatrician visit, they handed me a milestone checklist. You know the one. For special needs moms, those lists hit differently. We check “not yet” so many times and quietly wonder if any of them will ever become “yes.” But then under the social section, I noticed: “When playing with dolls, does your child hug the doll?” I paused. Cricket has never played with a doll. I’ve spent so much time helping her with blocks, sensory play, music etc, things tied to development and therapy. But dolls have never even crossed my mind. So when we got home, I pulled out my old Raggedy Anne which is soft and lightweight and totally perfect for her little hands. And you know what? She was interested! A pediatrician might not count it this as what they meant, but absolutely I counted it! For special needs moms, even the tiniest response can light up our day.
