Inside the box scenarios 🧤🔥 - Shots from cover - Delayed finishes - 1v1s - Touch into sight & Quick Finish These are some of the situations we’d try to create with only one attacker. #themoderndaygk #gk #goalkeepers #gktraining
💡 If you look long, you’ll still see the short. ⛔️ But if you only look short, you’ll never see the long. Goalkeepers are getting better with the ball at their feet — and more managers expect it. But we believe the issues lie in: ❌ Some are discouraged from going long ❌ Some don’t want to take the responsibility ❌ Some can’t go long ❌ So they stop looking for it ❌ And then… they become predictable The best keepers have the range — and the vision — to hurt teams when the space is there. Yes, it might go against a manager’s instructions — so the pressure to get it right increases. But the better you are at it, the lower that risk feels. 💡 Improving your longer passing game will improve your shorter passing game. Once you’re known for having that longer pass: Defences stretch. Gaps appear in front. Your short game becomes easier. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. If you’re a coach or keeper unwilling to adapt — you’ll be left behind. ✅ Work on your longer passing with intent: • Shorter run-ups • Different sides/angles of the box • Outside the box • Switches of play • First-time passes • ‘Weaker foot’ strikes • Carries under pressure • Passes with obstructions A good goalkeeper doesn’t just control their box. They control moments in games.
🗣️ Work on your COMMUNICATION. 💭 Even if you think you’re good at it. Communication is a huge part of your PRESENCE. You’ll play with all kinds of players. Good communication reduces unpredictable moments — whether you don’t know the players around you, or when players aren’t fully switched on. How to REALLY work on it: ✅ Add a ‘defender’ into different situations — both in and out of possession — to give you opportunities to work on what to say. ✅ Add decisions between you and your ‘defender’. ✅ Use pre-agreed trigger words with teammates. There has to be a reason to communicate — and that reason comes from what you see in front of you. 👀 This is why working on your communication will also improve your scanning — you can only communicate what you actually see. 🔑 Remember: it’s not just what you say, but how you say it. How you deliver a message can create urgency or bring calmness.
