Flying w/ Cats: Lessons I’ve learned & Mistakes to Avoid👇🏻 1. Get your cat used to their carrier so you haven't lost the battle before its begun. 2. Give your cat meds the day before + 1.5 hours before your flight. Not in the bathroom at the airport on the ground. 3. At security, you have option for a private screening or you can take your cat out and walk through the Detectors. But don't take him out until the very last minute for less stress. 4. Once you get through security, go to a family restroom so he can stretch his legs. Ill put out a portable litterbox but hes never used it. 5. Plus Instead of packing dry food & water pack HYDRATING TREATS. It's just easier. 6. Your Seating choices…. Aisle is smaller but easier to get out but people always disrupt him walking by. Window is bigger but harder to get out. Either way, let the fliers around you know you have a cat. I always make a joke so they are nicer in case they are dog people. 7. If your cat is a nervous pooper like mine….. I keep wipes, doggy bags, paper towels, hand sanitizer WITH ME AT MY SEAT. That way, the minute I smell something nasty, sand then I go into the backpack to scoop & bag it. Ill use wipes (in the air in my seat) and then excuse myself to go to the bathroom to toss everything or if its baad baad… ill bring him to the bathroom to clean up. It's just what you have to do. miss you everyday Otto. I can’t believe it’s been two years🕊️ Two years ago, I noticed that Otto was losing weight. I took him to the vet but they thought it was worms since he was only 3.5 years old. After treatment, he was still losing weight, so I got a second opinion. The second opinion told me to drive to Colorado State University’s vet school immediately. So I did. After countless tests, we learned that Otto had a rare cancr that had rapidly spread to his entire body. The doctor said he was past that point of chemo doing anything & he would be in too much pain. So I decided to take him to my dad’s house in Colorado to live out the rest of his days in a place he loved so much. Otto learned how to be an adventure cat on my dad’s orchard. He spent most days outside in the peach trees with his brother just enjoying life on the farm before van life. 14 days later, it was Otto’s time. I had a vet come to the house to help Otto pass. It was important to me that Atlas was with Otto when it happened. And then after, I let atlas have time with his body to understand. I can’t believe it’s been two years. While the hurt gets easier each day, I still feel a giant hole in my heart. BUT what a privilege that is… to feel so much love for something. Hug your loved ones tight. No day is promised.
